STORE SALE PRICES   Leave a comment

It’s written in reverse to what we are accustomed to in the west.  While we are used to seeing 10% off,  or reduced 30% and so on, the local system is with the shop owner’s interest indicated first. We see large single numerals so what do these indicate I have often wondered.  Here’s the answer. [...]

FONGSHAN AT NIGHT (KAOHSIUNG)   Leave a comment

Both pictures show the same street food restaurant. The food shop (above) had a unique device to remove excess cooking oil from the food.  It was a mini-spin drier much like that in laundromat’s – designed especially for a kilo of food.  Same eating house is shown in the top picture – far left side.  Food [...]

WELCOME TO THE EAST COAST   Leave a comment

My 4-star hotel has free-use bikes for guests.  I went looking for The Bank of Taiwan and met some vicious, huge dogs – fortunately chained up. Within 15 minutes I was lost – but with a map.  I needed to know where I was in order for the map to be of any use. The [...]

WHERE AM I?   1 comment

‘Shawn’ suggested Fongshan was worth visiting, and he was spot-on with that tip.  Several narrow lanes with old-style small shops. The Fongshan MRT station (#11) is on the Orange line west towards Dalio. I planned to walk back one station stop to Fongshan West, but got lost in the process.  No great worry as backtracking [...]

EATING CHEAPLY – KAOHSIUNG   Leave a comment

I don’t read many Chinese characters so this menu on the wall was a waste of time for me.  I spotted fish and rice at the counter behind glass. The fish cutlets were Spanish Mackerel (OK when the fish is small – avoid large-sized cutlets as this species is a known source of a tastless [...]

ROOSEVELT AVENUE, (Taipei)   Leave a comment

There is a building above every footpath in Taipei.  The ground floor has been reserved as a footpath (sidewalk) – a legacy of the Japanese era and of all the Asian cities,  unique to Taiwan. Roosevelt is the name of a former US president of course.  The USA gave $36 billion in aid to Taiwan [...]

FRUIT IN JULY   Leave a comment

Australia exports its top quality fruit – often to Taiwan. Fresh squeezed oranges from California or South Africa as sold near my hotel.  The giant mango is yet to be sampled for taste – I doubt if it will compare with Australian mangoes from Bowen, Queensland, known as Kensington Pride and (I think) Bowen Specials. [...]

SHILIN NIGHT MARKET (MRT RED LINE NORTH)   Leave a comment

7pm and 100 were lined up for deep-fried chicken.  I’ve seen this before but never inquired what they were buying.  It’s apparently the most popular item. Outside in the nearby street, the market is expanding into the narrow lanes.  Opposite the huge school was a red lantern restaurant. They call this fish a name that [...]

NIGHT MARKET JUICE BAR   Leave a comment

At Kaohsiung – the same place as featured in the new-design masthead above. With a new ‘theme’ as well we can now present much larger pictures, (although before most pictures could be enlarged with a click or two).
