Liberty Square – well worth visiting

Wreath at foot of CKS statue – an apology for 28 February 1947 ?

Taiwanese seek closure for past events known as the era of white terror.  An apology plus compensation for relatives of the victims is being sought.  A wreath at the CKS statue today seemed a good beginning .  It will only get better.

At 6pm as the national flag was being lowered in Liberty Square, nearby a bonfire was lit and thousands of people gathered around aboriginal singers performing with amplified voices and music.  Very nice.  Maybe associated with 228 or with the Lantern Festival?  Their performance seems to have been neglected from TV news in favor of spectacular fireworks, elsewhere.  The lanterns drifting into the night sky remind me of a sea filled with jellyfish.  Beautiful.

The Lantern Festival was held at Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall.  Thousands attended.  Spectacular fireworks with some of the crowd dressing in protective gear and having skyrockets fired at themselves!

Lasers lit the night sky with Taipei 101 building in the background.

Beautiful weather too.  23 degrees and a clear sky.  The crowd would have been delighted.   It was a big day.

YouTube video of the lantern festival’s laser show, taken from a better position than what I saw.
